The Tzaddik Yonattan Ben Uziel was a first generation Tana (Talmudic Sage), he lived just before the destruction of the Second Temple. He compiled a translation of the Neviim (Prophets) into aramic
His Yarzeit/hilulla is the כו' of Sivan
He was the greatest of the Students of Rabbi Hillel Hazaken
תנו רבנן: שמונים תלמידים היו לו להלל הזקן, שלושים מהם ראויים שתשרה עליהן שכינה כמשה רבנו, ושלושים מהם ראויים שתעמוד להם חמה כיהושע בן נון, עשרים בינונים, גדול שבכולן – יונתן בן עוזיאל, קטן שבכולן-רבן יוחנן בן זכאי.
Rabbi Hillel Hazakan had eighty students, of which thirty of them were known to be extremely scholarly and holy. About thirty, it was said, that they are "Most worthy of being immersed in the clouds of the Almighty as was Moshe Rabeinu". And thirty were quoted as being closest to Yehoshua Ben Nun". the twenty students, who were studying on an intermediate level.
Rabbi Yonattan Ben Uziel, was the greatest and Rabbbi Yochanan Ben Zakai was The smallest scholar among them
אמרו עליו על יונתן בן עוזיאל: בשעה שישב ועוסק בתורה כל עוף שפורח מעליו מיד נשרף, (רש"י: שהיו מלאכי השרת מתקבצין סביביו לשמוע דברי תורה מפיו, ותוספות פירשו: שהדברים שמחים כנתינתן בסיני שנתנה תורה באש) (סוכ כ"ח). תרגום של נביאים יונתן בן-עוזיאל אמרו מפי חגי זכריה ומלאכי, ונזדעזעה ארץ ישראל ת' פרסה על ת' פרסה, יצאה בת-קול אמרה מי הוא זה שגילה סתרי לבני-אדם, עמד יונתן בן עוזיאל על רגליו ואמר: אני הוא שגיליתי סתרייך לבני-אדם, גלוי וידוע לפניך שלא לכבודי עשיתי ולא לכבוד בית אבא אלא לכבודך עשיתי שלא ירבו מחלוקת בישראל, ועוד ביקש לגלות תרגום של כתובים יצאה בת-קול ואמרה לו: דייך, מאי טעמא? דאית ביה קץ משיח (מגילה ג)E
It was said about Yonattan ben Uziel: While he was sitting and learning Torah any bird that flew overhead was immediately burned, through the power of his learning. ( (Rashi explains: The Angels serving him were gathered around him to hear his words of Torah, and the Tosfos (commentaries) adds further: There was glory and happiness when the Torah was given On Mount Sinai and it was through fire (Succah 28). The translation of the Prophets by Yonasson ben Uziel were given to him directly from Chagai, Zacharia and Melachi, The Land of Israel trembled. A voice was heard (bas Kol) from above and asked who has revealed my secrets to mankind, Yonattan Ben Uziel stood up and acclaimed, I am the one who has revealed to Mankind, and it is well known that this I have done not for my honor, or for the honor my fathers houser, but for You. I have done this to avoid friction amongst our people and then asked permission to reveal translations of the written Torah but the voice said to him : nough, we will wait till the days of the Mashiach (Megilla 3)
נהוג לבקר בציון קברו ,הנמצא בעמוקה, בתקווה שבזכות תפילה במקום הקדוש ,יפתחו שערי שמיים ויימצא זיווגו של האדם המתפלל. מנהג זה נוצר גם בעקבות האמונה שהתנ"א היה רווק אך לעדות זו אין סימוכין ברורים אך בעיקר בעקבות פירושו לדברי התורה: "כי יקח איש אישה חדשה ... ושימח את אישתו אשר לקח.לא יחבל ריחים ורכב,כי נפש הוא חובל".(דברים כ"ד, ה-ו).
ואלה דברי התנ"א יונתן בן עוזיאל: " ודברה התורה בלשון נקבה:הרחים רמז לאישה,ורכב- רמז לאיש. לא לעכב את הקשר בין חתנים לכלות,וכל הכופר בזה...כופר בחיי העולם הבא"..
כן בעקבות פירושו של רש"י לדברי התלמוד: "כל מי שאין מכיר משפחתו ושבטו נפנה לשם,אמר רבא:והיא עמוקה משאול..."(יבמות י"ז).מפרש שם רש"י:"שאין מוצאים אשה פונים והולכים שם-והיא עמוקה". והבינו כאילו רמז לשם המקום עמוקה,שבתחומו נמצא קבר התנ"א יונתן בן עוזיאל.
It is customary to visit this gravesite, which located in Amuka,. One prays here with the hope that their prayers will be answered and The Gates of Heaven will accept their prayers and the single will find their life partner. This tradition came about through the faith of the Tana who was reported as not to have married although there is no known substance to this claim. according to the quotation from the Torah "A man should take a new wife…… and make the wife that he takes happy. No man shall take the mill, or the upper millstone to pledge: for he takes a mans life by pledge" (Deuteronomy chapt. 24.v 5,6)
And these are the words of the Talmudic Sage Yonattan Ben Uziel "The words of the Torah are in the feminine as the mill hints to the wife and the millstone hints to the man. One should not delay the relationship between a bride and groom and those that meddle with this ….meddles with everlasting life.
And so in the wake of the interpretation of Rashi of the words of the Talmud "All those who do not 'know' his family and tribe should be moved from there, and Rabba said: It is a deep(in Hebrew deep is amuka ) ("Yebamot 17), Rashi explains "If one does not find a wife – he should approach and turn there – and this is Amuka" Here we understand the reference to the place Amuka, where we find the sages gravesite Yonattan ben Uziel
There are many sgulot to this holy place which we shall elaborate further on, but the main ones are the special prayers and to go round the burial site seven times
A little about The Past And Present
Thirty years ago a new born baby was sick with Jaundice. His mother vowed a vow, that if he fully recovered, she would go to the gravesite of the Talmudic Sage Yonnatan Ben Uziel and look after the daily cleaning of the tzadik grave site. She sat down to rest under the tree, at the entrance of the holy gravesite hoping that her prayers would be answered. With the help of Hashem the child fully recovered and from that day on until she passed away, this mother kept faithfully to her vow, cleaning the gravesite and helped people who came to this special holly place. She also named her next son Yonattan Uziel. After this mother passed away, her children continued this tradition on her behalf and to this very day they arrive daily to this Holy Gravesite with the aim of carrying on the promise and to pray for the success of all Klal Yisroel and to make known the blessings of this sacred place.
To those who cannot come physically- for whatever reason- yet still want to receive blessings from the Holiness of this sacred place, we hope that this blessing will stand you in good stead.
